Which packaging material fits your product?

The right board depends on your product’s weight, how it ships and the impression you want to make. Here’s how our main materials compare.

Cardstock

Paperboard (cardboard)

A smooth, single-layer board with a bright surface that holds sharp, full-color print and fine detail.

Best for: retail cartons, cosmetics, supplements and lightweight products

Kraft

Unbleached brown board with a natural fiber look. Bold, simple artwork reads best on it, as colors print darker than on white board.

Best for: organic, handmade and food brands that want a natural feel

Open navy blue rigid box with a floral design inside the lid, featuring a beige geometric logo and Packaging Squad text, with two interior compartments.

Rigid board

Thick, sturdy board wrapped in printed paper. It keeps its shape, does not fold flat and gives a premium unboxing feel.

Best for: luxury goods, gift sets, electronics and presentation boxes

Exploded view of a corrugated cardboard's three layers: top linerboard, fluted medium, and bottom linerboard, with adhesive bonds indicated.

Corrugated

A fluted layer between two flat liners adds strength and cushioning. Thinner E-flute suits printed mailers; thicker B-flute suits heavier shipments.

Best for: mailer boxes, subscription boxes and e-commerce shipping

Finishes and special effects for custom packaging

A finish changes how your packaging looks, feels and holds up. Pick one for the whole surface, then add an effect to draw attention to your logo.

Gold Foiling finishing in card

Foil stamping

Heat and pressure transfer a thin metallic foil, such as gold, silver or rose gold, onto your design. Works best on logos and short text.

Best for: premium brands, cosmetics and gift packaging

Gold foil stamped logo with a spot UV coating for added shine and depth

Spot UV

A clear, high-gloss coating applied only to selected areas. Over a matte base, it makes logos and patterns shine by contrast.

Best for: highlighting a logo or pattern without adding color

Custom Lip Gloss Boxes

Gloss

A shiny coating over the whole surface that makes colors look richer and adds a layer of protection to the print.

Best for: bright, colorful designs and retail shelf impact

Holographic Foil Finishing

Holographic foil

A foil with a rainbow pattern that changes color as the light and viewing angle move. Most effective as an accent rather than full coverage.

Best for: beauty, youth and limited-edition products

Embossing

A die presses your design up from the back, creating a raised area customers can feel. Pairs well with foil for extra depth.

Best for: logos and brand names on premium boxes

Debossing Logo

Debossing

The opposite of embossing: your design is pressed down into the surface for a subtle, recessed impression.

Best for: minimal designs, kraft board and understated branding

Matte Lamination

Matte

A low-shine coating that gives a calm, modern look and keeps text easy to read under bright store lighting.

Best for: modern, minimal designs and pairing with spot UV

Soft Touch Lamination

Soft-touch lamination

A lamination with a smooth, velvety feel that signals quality the moment the box is picked up. On dark colors, it can show fingerprints with heavy handling.

Best for: luxury and gift packaging where feel matters

Tip: finishes can be combined. Matte with spot UV and foil with embossing are two popular pairings. Your free 3D mockup shows how they will look before anything is printed.
